Publishing Demystified

The purpose of this one is simple. Most likely everyone here knows I run Fae Corps Publishing and I have been doing this in the background for a while now. I plan on talking clearly about the tools I use for publishing, and the way that each one works. Demystifying what I do. Is that to say that I will be making my own self unnecessary? No, because my experience is valuable. I just feel like so much of the process is made out to be harder than it needs to be.

This week I have been trying to do life things, so I am feeling behind in the publishing process.

So much of the time I have huge amounts of work on my desk and I don’t always have the energy to do it all. The first thing I had to learn is that I would end up dropping balls in the process of making the books. I have had to learn which balls were glass and which were plastic.

This means that there are days when my health comes first and I am not able to get work done or even be accessible.

I love what I do but there is days that I can’t even get out of the bed. As a small publishing firm that means I have to plan on the time I will be down whenever I plan deadlines.

When I give a deadline and then have people wait to give me their stuff until way after the deadline it usually means I have to scramble to get it done. Places like Amazon punish the publisher who doesn’t have their stuff done on time. Failure to meet the schedule will get you prohibited from releasing pre-orders for a full year.

As I said above there is often a mystery about what I do, because I do it and I don’t make it a big deal.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

I will get those listed closer. I feel like if I were to put them on the blog it would put too much pressure. I have “penciled” in dates for several authors for 2025 already.

I have been transparent about the way I feel about AI.

November has been a big deal for the writers for a long time. Fae Corps Publishing blog always has a PAD challenge. We usually do not put the energy in the novel writing end.

The situation with Nano has me upset.

Fae corps publishing will be doing a Fae 50k on the blog as well as the Pad. This is going to be me posting encouragement for the ones that are trying to do the daily word count. I will be posting an invitation to join the discord and Facebook writing group for those who are needing the community support. I usually do the Pad posts in October, at least I schedule them then. I am going to be starting to get the Fae 50k posts scheduled around then as well.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

No, because my experience is valuable. I just feel like so much of the process is made out to be harder than it needs to be.

I listed the programs I use before in a previous post.

I am currently having issues with my pc. My go to pdf program glitched in the reinstall and my license is not working. I really don’t have the money to buy it again. So while I do the email chain to get the company to fix the issue, I still need to have a functional solution for pdf editing.

So I spent some time searching for a free option. I had been told that I can do some of my stuff in Libre draw which comes in the Libre office suite. I have found that one is true. Libre Draw will allow me to fix the covers and even do most of what I need to do.

I also found pdf gear. it is good for signing pdfs. it has some of the editing abilities I needed. it’s also free.

I don’t know if I will be using the program I had paid for again – I will not pay for it again so if I don’t get the problem fixed I will be just dropping it off my favorite list. I got several years of work from my purchase. So, if they can’t restore the license I won’t be that upset. I will just move on to completely freeware.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

I see quite a few small presses come and go.

The publishing industry is not an easy one.

Some of the ones that have seen remain are run by decent people who are in the industry because they honestly believe in their authors.

I end up trying to get authors that I want to read to publish.

I have to read everything that I publish, and I enjoy it.

I am doing a question and answer interview for this purpose soon .

I have been doing this for a while but I don’t know what I should post about today .

However , I did get asked to teach about how publishing works .

so , keep an eye on the fae corps publishing YouTube and the Owl Light network on YouTube. if you have any questions about publishing feel free to ask . I will see if I can get it touched on in the interview.

Okay I will admit it.

Today I want to get on my soapbox, just a little bit.

Every publishing company has a set of rules for submissions. some are just because it makes it easier to read the submission … others are because of the people who are reading the submission.

Fae corps publishing asks for the submission to be sent in either a doc or Google docs link. We ask for no Erotica or Excessive Gore.

The first part is so that if it’s accepted it will make it easier to get it edited and then placed in a manuscript.

The second one is because I have to read everything that I publish.

The latest anthology subject was monsters. I expected it to be a small bit of horror and gore. I really don’t want to be a jerk but I didn’t expect anything with erotica in it .

I read some erotica .

On my own personal terms, when I am in the correct mindset for it. when I am not in the proper mindset I will be unable to deal with it.

I also recommend you to send trigger warnings when you send story submissions. If I receive a story with something that requires a trigger warning and it doesn’t have one …it is not going to be at the top of the approval list .

You want to get your story in the book …also don’t pester the editor before they have a chance to even read all the submissions.

okay soapbox done.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

There are many different places that an indie publishing company has that we can use to publish the book. I admit that I have been unable to go through all of the options yet.

The biggest ones are draft2digital, Amazon, Google play, Barnes and Noble, and Ingram spark. Smashwords used to be a good one as well but they merged with D2d.

now most of my research is based on the US. I want to extend my reach to the rest of the world…. Amazon and Ingram are good for this. but I don’t think that they are all that I want.

Especially with Amazon and the policy of allowing people to read the book and then return it for stupid reasons.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

This week I want to talk about the timeline for publishing. Every firm has a different way to do it. This is my timeline.

I plan for the release date roughly two months ahead, most of the time.

The first month is editing, cover design, and formatting for the manuscript. This is when I get the preorder link setup.

I go back through around the second month and check that I have done all of the settings and everything is ready for release day.

The last week before release is another check. Usually it is Amazon needing a last minute detail run. I try to get everything done in the first week so I don’t have to stress about it.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

This week I want to discuss what Fae Corps Publishing actually is willing to publish and why.

We avoid extreme gore. We avoid erotica. We do not pursue the political end that dehumanizes. We don’t publish Manga. We have yet to publish game books – through this may change in the future. We will not publish anything promoting Rape.

Extreme gore, dehumanizing political stories, and promoting Rape are all because they make us feel uncomfortable.

Erotica takes a special marketing, and it is not a thing we are aware of the readership for. We are not against erotica, but we are ignorant of the marketing skills and admit it freely.

Manga, and sometimes graphic novels, takes a skill to do the layout. It is not a skill that I yet possess. I may be able to learn it… But I’m not in a hurry to add to my platform.

Now I have listed the non publish list…. Here’s the list of the things we like to publish…

Speculative fiction, Horror, Science fiction, romance, Poetry (all poetry), Children’s Books (both picture book and chapter book), Young Adult, Fantasy, nonfiction (memoir, writing tips, etc)

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

This week I want to discuss scheduling for book releases.

When I first started to do the publication thing, I would just publish the book as soon as I had it ready. I did nothing for marketing and I wondered why I was not selling anything.

Then I learned about pre-order and the benefits of that. I learned about marketing the book. I learned that both of these things have a timeline. Amazon will put you on a year long restriction from doing pre-orders if you mess up with the timeline. It’s not a good thing.

It gives you roughly a week before the day of release to have all of the information for the book in. I am often overwhelmed and forgetful. So I set myself a deadline to get everything settled by nearly a month ahead of the release date.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.
