You Better Be Lightning by Andrea Gibson

You Better Be Lightning by Andrea Gibson is a queer, political, and feminist collection guided by self-reflection.

The poems range from close examination of the deeply personal to the vastness of the world, exploring the expansiveness of the human experience from love to illness, from space to climate change, and so much more in between.

One of the most celebrated poets and performers of the last two decades, Andrea Gibson’s trademark honesty and vulnerability are on full display in You Better Be Lightning, welcoming and inviting readers to be just as they are.

My Thoughts

You Better Be Lightning by Andrea Gibson is a collection of poetry that I borrowed from the library last month.

Gibson’s poetry is considerably more down-to-earth than what I typically read. That isn’t a bad thing. In fact, I found the collection quite enjoyable.

One thing that particularly impressed me was Gibson’s relationship with rhythm. As a poet myself, I can appreciate the skill involved. There is a natural cadence to the writing that makes it easy to hear the poems being performed, even when you’re simply reading the words on a page.

Gibson’s background in spoken-word poetry really comes through in the work.

Another strength of the collection is its accessibility. I would especially recommend this collection to queer readers. Both the representation and the way Gibson expresses queer experiences make it a worthwhile read.

Ultimately, You Better Be Lightning is a collection I would recommend, even to people who don’t ordinarily read poetry.

You don’t have to share a poet’s particular style to appreciate their craft, and Andrea Gibson certainly demonstrates that here.

Saturday Thoughts

This is my work in progress list… and how I keep track of my word count.

So, You may have noticed the change in the word accounting. There are a couple of reasons for it. I am no longer going to use OneNote. They betrayed me in the worst way. I finished I am Nobody only to find that OneNote had literally destroyed 6 of the poems. Instead of my poem I saw the image below. The only way to fix this is to reset the cache on OneNote to a previous date. That would erase more writing. I am not doing it. I have been doing a lot of writing recently and do not wish to loose any of it. OneNote is also not convenient for backups.

So I am switching my notebooks app again. This is an open source program that is available across multiple platforms. The plan I will be getting costs the same monthly as OneNote did. However, it got me thinking about the way I do things. I can schedule regular backups for things to return a measure of safety to my writing. I still wanted to make this work. The Blog only is able to stay stable for me because it is not a hard thing to maintain. I stay busy and do not want extra work if I can help it. So, I had this put together. It has its home in my Google Drive and I can still update as I write. I can take the image for the blog. This fills that hole nicely. It also happens to be a pretty thing. Not always was my screenshots pretty.

Amazon has started reinforcing limits on the weekly uploads. So I am struggling to get all of the planned books up for Kid’s week. (Good thing I started so soon). There will be me fighting with Kid’s week up to and likely past the wire. All but one are available from Draft2digital and are on our Books2read catalog. The one will be up before the weekend ends I hope. This year has quite a few offerings. All great options.

So, Because I finished I am Nobody… I will have Decaying Thoughts and I am Nobody (Both of course by Patricia) releasing among our Poetry month releases in April. I believe Serena may have two to release then as well too. Since I made an Oops last year and failed to publish her The Crypt’s Secrets, it is releasing in November. I really thought I had already published that, but as I was sick when she finished it I am unsurprised. Oh, well. It will still fly into the world.

I am hoping that this new app will bring some of the muse with it. We will see.

I am running behind due to the sleep. so I will be probably doing another serenity art corner tomorrow…also I will be announcing something special in November.

This is a busy time for me due to Fae Corps Publishing. Anthologies and getting ready for kids week. Serena has a volume I thought I had published already that will be releasing on November 14. The Crypt’s Secrets got a minor delay because I was sick when I finished writing it. It is back on track and available to pre-order.

I am currently working on putting together the Kids week anthology. I will be making this a yearly thing. The spring anthology call has been released for those who are interested.

Tuesday tunes will likely make a return this week. I will do a gallery post for drawtober on Thursday.
