Hozier – Take me to church

Lyrics –

My lover’s got humor
She’s the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody’s disapproval
I should’ve worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She is the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday’s getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
“We were born sick”, you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me ‘worship in the bedroom’
The only heaven I’ll be sent to
Is when I’m alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I’m a pagan of the good times
My lover’s the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That’s a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We’ve a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life

My two cents *

I love the innuendo in this. The background meaning. Religion is such a personal thing, one that is often used to do major harm to each other.

Pink Floyd – Brain Damage

Lyrics –

The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path
The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paperboy brings more

[Chorus]
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon

[Verse 2]
The lunatic is in my head (*Laughs*)
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade
You make the change
You rearrange me till I’m sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There’s someone in my head but it’s not me

[Chorus]
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you’re in starts playing different tunes
I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon

[Outro]
I can’t think of anything to say except
Hahahahahahaha!
I think it’s marvellous!
Hahaha…

My two cents :

To be honest… I was struggling with the right song to use today. With the crazy of this week and then add in life and the chaos that goes into it…. Well I am wiped. And it is only Tuesday. So I asked my boyfriend for music suggestions, as he likes a variety of music similar to me.

His first two suggested songs didn’t work for me. He suggested Five Finger Death Punch – Sham Pain or Madonna -Material Girl… One too heavy and dark, the other opposite direction and completely out of the range I was looking for. When I told him that, he suggested Pink Floyd. I have good memories attached to all of Pink Floyd’s best songs. They are definitely go to music when my life is chaotic. This one really speaks to me me today as I am feeling like a lunatic running the halls. Which band or song do you have the most memories attached to? Next Tuesday I will be doing another Pink Floyd so I can share the memory and hopefully the smile that always accompanies it for me.

I always have a wide variety of choices for music to pick from. My music tastes literally run from classical to heavy metal and everything in between. That being said… I am only chosing one per week to discuss. This week I am choosing a cover song. I admit that I never heard the original. I dunno if I would like it as much. I am a big Supernatural fan. It is what got me listening to the song to start with.

Brother (as sung by Jensen Ackles)

Lyrics :

Ramblers in the wilderness we can’t find what we need
We get a little restless from the searching
Get a little worn down in between
Like a bull chasing the matador is the man left to his own schemes
Everybody needs someone beside em’ shining like a lighthouse from the sea

Brother, let me be your shelter
Never leave you all alone
I can be the one you call
When you’re low
Brother, let me be your fortress
When the night winds are driving on
Be the one to light the way
Bring you home

Face down in the desert now there’s a cage locked around my heart
I found a way to drop the keys where my failures were
Now my hands can’t reach that far
I ain’t made for a rivalry I could never take the world alone
I know that in my weakness I am strong, but
It’s your love that brings me home

My two cents :

Not all family is blood. Not everyone has blood family that they are close to. I have a decent, albeit somewhat distant, relationship with my own sibling. The distant is a physical thing. We chose homes in states hours from each other. So I miss him. To me this song talks about the type of relationship that you never need to question. I have had very few of this type in my life. I can count on one hand how many. Jensen really has an amazing voice and he sings this with so much emotion. Even if you have never seen the show the video will feel like you are seeing family.

Hello my lovelies! Thank you all for your understanding and well wishes yesterday. I am not back to 100% but I am doing better. This weekend was a lot of me sleeping to recover. Today’s song took me some thinking. I like to use songs that have meaning to me, beyond just me liking it. That way I can perhaps encite a discussion, or try to. So there were several that popped to mind due to indepence day being this week…the one that won the spotlight in my mind isn’t some patriotic theme.

Today I want to talk about Independence Day by Martina McBride.

Well she seemed all right by dawn’s early light
Though she looked a little worried and weak.
She tried to pretend he wasn’t drinkin’ again
But daddy’d left the proof on her cheek.
And I was only eight years old that summer
And I always seemed to be in the way
So I took myself down to the fair in town
On Independence Day.

Well ,word gets around in a small, small town
They said he was a dangerous man
But mama was proud and she stood her ground
But she knew she was on the losin’ end.
Some folks whispered and some folks talked
But everybody looked the other way
And when time ran out there was no one about
On Independence Day.

Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning.
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It’s Independence Day.

Well, she lit up the sky that fourth of July
By the time that the firemen come
They just put out the flames
And took down some names
And send me to the county home.
Now I ain’t sayin’ it’s right or it’s wrong
But maybe it’s the only way.
Talk about your revolution
It’s Independence Day.

Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing
Let the whole world know that today
Is a day of reckoning.
Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong
Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay
It’s Independence Day.

Roll the stone away
It’s Independence Day.

This song is so powerful. The lyrics speak so much about the other side of Domestic Violence. The side of those who are helpless, just watching and having no way of stopping that speeding mess.

Today I chose an older song. It’s temporally appropriate. Today, twenty one years ago, I made the choice that the song talks about. Today he is 21. Happy Birthday.

Michelle Wright

He would be 16.

She gets in her car,
October Friday night.
Home from work down
thirty-one, past Franklin
High.
She can see the
stadium lights, she can hear
the band. A thousand crazy
high school kids screamin’
in the stands.
Quarter-back and home-
coming queen, love to young
to know what it means.
She goes back in time oh in
her mind, its like a dream.

Chorus:
He would be sixteen. The son she
never knew. It hurt so much to
give him up, but what else could she do?
He would be sixteen.

A child should have a home.
she knows her folks were right.
She never heard the couples name,
just that they were nice.
She wonders if he’s taller than his father was?
Does he drive a car by now?
Has he been in love?
She shakes back to relatity.
She knows things turn out the way
they should be. But she just can’t
help but ask herself; does he know about me?

Chorus:
He would be sixteen. The son she
never knew. It hurt so much to give him
up, but what else could she do?
He would be sixteen.

She never even got to hold him!
And nights like this it hurts to miss
the son shes never seen.
He would be sixteen.
He would be sixteen.
(lyrics end)

Adoption is not an easy choice. I at the time felt like I was giving him his best chance. It was my own decision… However, it affected so many. I have been lucky, I have been able to know my child. He is an amazing young man. Still, I could have ended up like the girl in this song.

Tuesday Tunes.

Music is such a potent part of my life. It always has been. My taste in music ranges from the obvious you have to hear this to omg please don’t judge me. Lol. My father’s grandfather owned a country station (Wpwc) in Dumfries, Virginia when I was a child. I spent a lot of time there. So much so that I wanted to be a Dj as a child.

That was not the dream that I ended up following. Still, music has always had a influence on my life. My mom was Country all the way. She has never listened to anything else really. My dad was into the old rock. And my grandma loved classical music. My personal music library has a little of everything. Though, nowadays I listen to YouTube mostly. Yeah… I know about Spotify. I don’t like the controls. YouTube is just easier for me.

Some of my favorite artists are

P!NK, Disturbed, Reba, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, Handel, LL Cool J,

Twenty one pilots, Panic! At the Disco, Martina McBride, Bad Wolves, and so many more. I think that a well written song is meant to pull the heart from the listener. And the best songs are not always sung by the right artist first. I have some songs where I prefer the cover, and others that the original is my favorite. For example…Careless Whisper the remake & The Original. It is a disagreement in my house because I am an original sort of girl there, and the boyfriend loves the remake.

Music has such an impact on social ideals, and society in general. Everyone views it differently. How do you view music? What is your favorite song or artist? Has music influnced your life in any specific way?

Tea party Tuesday.

Well… I had a guest blogger planned. Due to illness, that fell through. So I was thinking about what to do today… And I realized that every great party has music. My own music tastes are all over the place. I love classical, rock, country and pop. I enjoy the smooth jazz, r&b, and hip-hop. Give me a good blues or some bluegrass. Metal and the soft japanese drums. Yeah, i just love music.

So what is your favorite songs? Post me a link! I may pick one of the links to send a handwritten copy of a poem to.

Music soothes the mad poet…

*image found on Google and only used for inspiration.

Recently I read a blog done about music and the effect it had on the life of the blogs writer.  It got me thinking.  So often life for me has revolved around the music.  The sounds of life have always been a rich and full part of who I am. I remember my Dad’s deep baritone singing “Amazing Grace” to me as a child. I remember going to see my great grandfather at his radio station and being enamored by it all.  I loved the poetry in the songs,  how it felt like your soul was understood by the person singing.

Grandma Ethel,  my Mom’s mom,  used to sit and listen to stories from her youth and she would share those with me.  Radio shows from another era.  She taught me to enjoy classical music,  how to close my eyes and visualize the music.

Music for my mom was such a rigid thing.  If it was not country,  she would not listen to it. And as a child,  in her house I was not supposed to listen to anything else either.  But daddy had records of all manner of song.  Stray cats,  and soft rock like it.  She would eventually learn to bend,  she grew to enjoy some bubble gum rock along with the country.

I still remember the first time I heard real rock. My soon to be step brother had a cassette tape of Dr Feelgood.  I was eleven.  It felt wild and I was hooked.  I still enjoy country,  but I am eclectic in my music tastes.

Mind you I am skipping over bits of music and memory. I am trying not to ramble here.  The next influence was my first day of high school.  I was six weeks late because I had a child at fourteen.  I was scared to death of what high school would be. My elder step brother was dating this chick,  and man I looked up to her.  She was confident and sexy and badass. All of the things I knew I would never be.  Well she met me at the cafeteria doors holding a boom box.  It was blasting so loudly that the windows in the building were rattling.  Pink Floyd;  Another Brick in the wall part 3…Aka We Don’t Need No Education.  I can’t tell you how much better I felt about high school.  It was not that school was actually any better.  In truth it was a nightmare.  I just suddenly felt braver,  more secure.

Looking back,  every person who was ever a intimate in my life has a song.  My playlist is often a minefield of memories.  Some of which I have not even explained to my boyfriend of over twenty one years. Not because of anything other than the fact that I am done with the one who was once attached to the memory.

I may have been a singer and put my love of music to use,  except for the fact that I am unfortunately tone deaf.  I was not gifted with the beautiful singing voice that I would have loved.  It has not stopped me, i sang to my daughter.  I refused to deny her that bond,  both with me and with music. She still will ask for her lullabies when she is feeling bad.

I sang four main ones to her.  “Hush little baby “,”the greatest love of all “(slightly mangled as i forget one verse), “rockabye baby ” (altered so mama catches as the original bothered me)  and the last is called the puzzle song.

Lyrics for the puzzle song: *note I learned this is a chorus class in school and have no freaking clue who wrote it.

I gave my love a cherry that had no stone,  I gave my love a chicken that had no bone,   I gave my love a ring that had no end,   And I gave my love a baby with no cry-in.

How can there be a cherry with no stone?  How can there be a chicken with no bone?   How can there be a ring with no end?  And how can there be a baby with no cry-in?

A cherry when it is blooming,  it has no stone,  A chicken when it is peeping it has no bone,  a ring when it is rolling it has no end and a baby when it is sleeping has no cry-in.

What songs have made a difference in your life?  I would love to hear about them.

My initial thought is my music is awesome.

Inspiration and remakes

Disturbed Official video for sound of Silence

I posted this link because today it was my strongest Influence. I am often extra critical of remakes, as I feel that the statement that there is nothing new under the sun keeps being proven. I however have a few that I prefer the remakes to the original but not many. This is one of those. The lead singer is perfect for this song. I found in this a bit of inspiration. I have found inspiration for poetry before in songs. The way a song makes me feel or the way certain lines go together. It amazes me what can be inspiration and what can merely be just enjoyable.

I know a lot of people who look for their inspiration only in writing prompts. Or in the world around them. I find inspiration everywhere. Do you?
