Patricia Harris-
Patricia Harris is a dreamer, crafter, gamer and digital artist who loves creativity in life. A half mad poet, her writing is found all over social media and various other websites. She is a devoted mom who can be found doing a variety of art when she isn’t penning poetry and writing words. She is owner of the indie publishing company Fae Corps publishing. And as Serena Mossgraves -
Serena Mossgraves is a twisted faery with a love of gothic settings and an urge to scare. She’s constantly on the prowl for new ways to twist old stories into dark tales that excite and terrify. And I occasionally write poetry in forms. I try to occasionally explain to others about those forms because there is no type of poetry that I don’t enjoy talking about.
Today I want to talk about Cut Poetry. I may end up doing this for each of the forms that I actually understand. (Cause sometimes I don’t understand the form rules)
If you want more examples of my poetry in the use of forms I have a couple of volumes already published and one in progress. Those are Xactly poetic and Ars Poetica, published. The current volume in progress is Lyrical Recycling, a volume of Entirely cut poetry. Xactly poetic is just various forms because I wanted to prove to myself that I could. Ars Poetica is a volume based on the form it was named after.
Cut poetry is basically seeing beauty in what already exists. It is very best to describe it as upcycling words. Cut poetry is sometimes called found poetry. There are a few types of Cut/Found poetry. Blackout poems are in this group. The type I prefer are slightly different. I prefer the list poem variety.
It requires you to pick sources for the words for your poem. For my volume I chose song lyrics. That gave me a huge variety of things to use to make the poem work. I have in the past used song titles, book titles, show titles. The thing is to really make Cut Poetry work you want to grab more than one word from each source.
Here is the poem that I made with song titles. It was published in Xactly poetic originally.
(Song Titles)
You should be sad, This is why, I found The devil in I Hate me, Heaven knows I am Still learning.
They said I was special... Fragile Minds Fuck it up.
Cover me in sunshine, Joke's on you, All good girls go to Hell... Don't threaten me with a good time.
I can't decide What about us, When the party's over Sometimes she forgets Why That's the way love goes.
Each line is from a different source. Quite a few people question the legality of Cut Poetry because you are literally using other people’s words to create something new. As long as you properly attribute the poem you are not breaking copyright. My poem above attributes the source in the title. However, not always is that as easy. With song lyrics I have to make sure I list the songs I used for each poetry.
Here is an example from Lyrical Recycling.
Rock Bottom
(song titles are : Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home)by Elle King and Miranda Lambert, bottle tells me so by Ashley Mcbryde, Hurt by Johnny Cash, Rock Bottom by Citizen Soldier, Now I'm in it by Haim *plus I add a line to make it work)
There's always time for jumping off the deep end From the shape I'm in, I must have barely made it to the bed If this ain't bottom, it's as far down as I ever wanna go The party's over and as always, I'm the last one to know
Try to run but my demons follow Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair I focus on the pain The only thing that’s real
Forget my whole existence 'cause everything's wrong My breaking point, so far behind I've been trying to find my way back for a minute My limit's in the rearview, I've crossed every line still running so I feel like nothing is left behind
Note the attribution. That allows the reader to go to the original source and see how you have pulled from it.
I feel like this is one of the easier forms. I will likely be doing more of this but I don’t want to put it on a specific day as I do not see it as a long term blog series.
Excitement abounds I almost can’t wait Relax, I don’t want your baby I already ate Though I do tend to generally kill Kill things that don’t fight back I see this village What does it hold? What shall I butcher them with Fire or cold? Running from me sure you’d think ‘He’s a pathological bloodthirsty homicidal maniac!’ I’d kill kittens and puppies and bunnies I’d maim toddlers and teens and then more You see a wife? I see a widow But what then? Can’t you see? I’d kill four! I want to incinerate and decapitate I want to melt Want to melt some faces Watching the peasants…what do they call it? Ahh…grieve! I suppose that being undead there’s not much to life A soul is needed for loving…feeling… How does this all not make me…what’s that word again? Heave! You’ve nowhere to hide Nowhere to run Your village will burn like the heart of the sun! With infinite glee It’s going to be me That slaughters the world! How could I glare into these eyes And then not stab them? How could I stare at their loss And then not laugh? I’d cut him in half Then I’d graft His head back onto his shoulders Or after I’d lop it I’d make a puppet On top of a staff! I am a lord that is sometimes bored Have some urges and need to fulfill them After my mayhem I simply don’t…what’s the word? Care! The stench in the air The smell of the gore The carnage far greater than any war My legacy Death becomes…me! I’ll slaughter the world
My 2 cents –
okay I am in a silly mood. this is one of two great parody songs that the looking for group comic guys put together with an animated video for. I love them both.
This is my work in progress list… and how I keep track of my word count.
This week is an odd one. You will probably notice that the numbers have changed very little. That is because the writing was not something that I would list.
I wrote a new children’s book.
I wrote the outline for a story that I plan on writing soon but I didn’t actually write anything in the story yet.
I wrote stuff in emails for various reasons that kept my brain busy and away from my more creative adventures.
I wrote in my personal journal that is labeled as word vomit and will hopefully not see sunlight ever.
As you can see, none of them would end up on the list. The first one is completely written. this list is works in progress. the second one is only an idea at this point and not even started as far as I am concerned. the third is not creative at all. and the fourth is clearing the trash so I can write.
Some weeks are like this for me. These are the ones where I do more art or crafting because my brain has decided to be difficult when I try to write.
On the craft side…we decided to move my studio into the house to give me access to electricity and more space. This week I spent quite some time sorting and organizing the new craft room. My son moved everything inside for me (except for one table which we need to make space for first) And I have been sorting through and cleaning up my supplies. I will try to take pictures and post it when I get it done. Unfortunately, I have overdone. Which is frustrating and painful.
okay I will admit that a lot of the poetry I write has a darker tone. my art is more childish but it too has some dark tones. I will say it is because of my life thus far.
There’s whimsy and love notes mixed in the dark things. I recently got a comment on one of my poems that bothered me. I am sure that it was from a good place, but what if it wasn’t.
I mean I don’t want my poetry or art to push someone to the point of no return. please if my words make you feel like you need to do something drastic ….stop. you are a light in the world whether you realize it or not.
No one in all of heaven or earth is unimportant.
if you need to send me a message. I will always respond even if I only get to do so once.
This felt more important than Tuesday Tunes. that returns next week.
