A day for me to discuss music

Lyrics –

Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn’t you like to see something strange?
Come with us and you will see
This, our town of Halloween
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night
This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat ’til the neighbors gonna die of fright
It’s our town, everybody scream
In this town of Halloween
I am the one hiding under your bed
Teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red
I am the one hiding under your stairs
Fingers like snakes and spiders in my hair
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween, Halloween
Halloween, Halloween
In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song
In this town, don’t we love it now?
Everybody’s waiting for the next surprise
‘Round that corner, man hiding in the trash can
Something’s waiting now to pounce and how you’ll scream
This is Halloween, red and black, slimy green
Aren’t you scared? Well, that’s just fine
Say it once, say it twice
Take a chance and roll the dice
Ride with the moon in the dead of night
Everybody scream, everybody scream
In our town of Halloween
I am the clown with the tear-away face
Here in a flash and gone without a trace
I am the who when you call, “Who’s there?”
I am the wind blowing through your hair
I am the shadow on the moon at night
Filling your dreams to the brim with fright
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Halloween, Halloween
‘Alloween, ‘alloween
‘Alloween, ‘alloween
Tender lumplings everywhere
Life’s no fun without a good scare
That’s our job, but we’re not mean
In our town of Halloween
In this town, don’t we love it now?
Everybody is waiting for the next surprise
Skeleton Jack might catch you in the back
And scream like a banshee
Make you jump out of your skin
This is Halloween, everybody scream
Won’t you please make way for a very special guy
Our man Jack is king of the Pumpkin Patch
Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King now
This is Halloween, this is Halloween
‘Alloween, ‘alloween
‘Alloween, ‘alloween
In this town we call home
Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

My 2 cents –

Okay I will admit that I knew that today’s song had to be This Is Halloween…but I didn’t expect to find this version. I was so excited to see such a fun version.

A day for me to discuss music

Lyrics –

Got a boy back home in Michigan
And it tastes like Jack when I’m kissing him
So I told him that I never really liked his friends
Now he’s gone and he’s calling me a bitch again
There’s a guy that lives in a garden state
And he told me that we make it ’til we graduate
So I told him that the music would be worth the wait
But he wants me in the kitchen with a dinner plate
I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe
That we’re meant to be
But jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy
Get the best of me
Look, I don’t mean to frustrate, but I
Always make the same mistakes, yeah I
Always make the same mistakes ’cause
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
But you can’t blame me for tryin’
You know I’d be lyin’ sayin’
You were the one (ooh-ooh)
That could finally fix me
Lookin’ at my history
I’m bad at love
Got a girl with California eyes
And I thought that she could really be the one this time
But I never got the chance to make her mine
Because she fell in love with little thin white lines
London girl with an attitude
We never told no one but we look so cute
Both got way better things to do
But I always think about it when I’m riding through
I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe
That I’m in too deep
And jealousy, jealousy, jealousy, jealousy
Get the best in me
Look, I don’t mean to frustrate, but I
Always make the same mistakes, yeah I
Always make the same mistakes ’cause
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
But you can’t blame me for tryin’
You know I’d be lyin’ sayin’
You were the one (ooh-ooh)
That could finally fix me
Lookin’ at my history
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
Oh, you know, you know, you know, you know (ooh)
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
I know that you’re afraid
I’m gonna walk away
Each time the feeling fades
Each time the feeling fades
I know that you’re afraid
I’m gonna walk away
Each time the feeling fades
You know I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
But you can’t blame me for tryin’
You know I’d be lyin’ sayin’
You were the one (ooh-ooh)
That could finally fix me
Lookin’ at my history
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
Oh, you know, you know, you know, you know (ooh)
I’m bad at love (ooh-ooh)
Oh, oh

My 2 cents –

This song sounds so much like the stories I tell of my past romances that I sometimes wonder who was watching me.

The Waiter I picked up and dated for 2 weeks until I found out He had been married for 2 years.

The sweet girl I scared because I was so reckless with my own life.

The lover I acquired because our fiances cheated on us, so we decided to return the favor.

The lover that I would have spent hours listening to because he understood me, but we met when I couldn’t stay.

They say if a poet loves you then you will be immortal…and each of them has been. For a part of me loves everyone I have ever loved. Even if I never should have.

Lyrics –

Hey there little red riding hood
You sure are looking good
You’re everything a big bad wolf could want

Little red riding hood
I don’t think little big girls should
Go walking in these spooky old woods alone

What big eyes you have
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad
Just to see that you don’t get chased
I think I oughta walk with you for a ways

What full lips you have
They’re sure to lure someone bad
So until you get to Grandma’s place
I think you oughta walk with me and be safe

Gonna keep my sheep suit on
‘Til I’m sure that you’ve been shown
That I can be trusted walking with you alone

Little red riding hood
I’d like to hold you if I could
But you might think I’m a big bad wolf so I won’t

What a big heart I have
The better to love you with
Little red riding hood
Even bad wolves can be good

I try to keep satisfied
Just to walk close by your side
Maybe you’ll see things my way
‘Fore we get to Grandma’s place

Little red riding hood
You sure are looking good
You’re everything a big bad wolf could want

Little red riding hood
I don’t think little big girls should
Go walking in these spooky old woods alone

What big eyes you have
The kind of eyes that drive wolves mad
Just to see that you don’t get chased
I think I oughta walk with you for a ways

What full lips you have
They’re sure to lure someone bad
So until you get to Grandma’s place
I think you oughta walk with me and be safe

My 2 cents –

I realize this is a cover… But the sexy female voice singing a song about a sexy female… Well that’s a good idea. Or at least to me it is.

I’m Gen X. That damn song is practically the anthem of my generation. And it’s been updated with this cover. It breaks my heart. But it is so freaking right.

A day for me to discuss music

Usually, I pick a single song…Today I want to talk about covers. These have such a fine line. I love Disturbed’s cover of Song of Silence and Hate Seether’s Careless Whisper…Though both were well done the second rubs me the wrong way because of how special that song is to me. There are several songs that people don’t realize are cover songs. (Like the Fugee’s hit of “Killing me softly” was originally sung by Roberta Flack. ) Well done covers change a song and add something to it. Sometimes That makes the song terrible. Sometimes it improves it. Depends very strongly on who is listening. It is entirely possible to enjoy both versions. I love Zombie by the Cranberries and by Bad Wolves. I also enjoy Enter Sandman by both Metallica and SHEL. So covers are not always an if /or situation.

That being said…What is your favorite covered song? Who sang it originally? Who covered it, and was the cover better?

I know I have posted the song before. It is a favorite of mine. I felt like it is whimsical enough to bring a smile. I want to create smiles.

Lyrics –

Train roll on
On down the line, won’t you
Please take me far away
Now I feel the wind blow
Outside my door, means I’m
I’m leaving my woman at home, Lordy
Tuesday’s gone with the wind
Oh, my baby’s gone, with the wind
And I don’t know
Oh, where I’m going
I just want to be left alone
Well, when this train ends
I’ll try again, oh but I’m
I’m leaving my woman at home, Lordy
Tuesday’s gone, with the wind
Tuesday’s gone, with the wind
Tuesday’s gone, with the wind
My baby’s gone, with the wind
Train roll on
Tuesday’s gone
The train roll on
A many miles from my home, see I’m
I’m riding my blues away, yeah
Well Tuesday, you see
Oh, she had to be free, Lord but
Somehow I got to carry on, Lordy
Tuesday’s gone, with the wind
Tuesday’s gone, with the wind
Tuesday’s gone, with the wind,
oh My baby’s gone, with the wind
Train, roll on, ooh’
Cause my baby’s gone
I’m riding my blues babe
Trying to ride my blues
Ride on train
Ride on train
Ride my blues, babe
Come back to me, babe
Come back to me, oh, train

My 2 Cents –
Lynard Skynard did it first, but I love Metallica’s cover. This is a song from my teens. Considering the fresh passing of the year, I find myself nostalgic. Craving foods from childhood and listening to the music I loved then. I grew up on country, it was all mama would listen to. I went wild. I listen to everything. Classical, classic rock, country, Rhythm and Blues, Bluegrass, rap, heavy metal, pop. you name the genre and I likely have a favorite band. I firmly believe music shows us who a person is…based on their music preferences. That being said…I will listen to just about anything, and give honest opinions. it is unusual for me to prefer the cover, but this is one where I do, What is your favorite song?

Marilyn Manson – The End
Is a cover of
The Doors – The End

Lyrics –

[Intro]

[Chorus]
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend
The end

[Verse 1]
Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I’ll never look into your eyes again

[Verse 2]
Can you picture what will be?
So limitless and free
Desperately in need
Of some stranger’s hand
In a desperate land

[Verse 3]
Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

[Verse 4]
There’s danger on the edge of town
Ride the King’s Highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby
Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake, he’s long, seven miles
Ride the snake
He’s old and his skin is cold
The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here and we’ll do the rest
The blue bus is calling us
The blue bus is calling us
Driver, where you taking us?

[Verse 5]
The killer awoke before dawn
He put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door
And he looked inside
“Father?” “Yes, son?” “I want to kill you”
“Mother? I want to…”

[Bridge]
Come on baby, take a chance with us
Come on baby, take a chance with us
Come on baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Of the blue bus, on the blue bus, on the blue bus
Come on yeah
Fuck, fuck
Fuck fuck, fuck, fuck
Come on baby, fuck me baby yeah
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
Come on baby, fuck me baby
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
Come on
Fuck fuck
Alright
Fuck fuck
Kill, kill, kill, kill

[Chorus]
This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

[Verse 6]
It hurts to set you free
But you’ll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die
This is the end

My 2 cents –
Covers are iffy. Especially when the original is one of my all time favorite songs. There are a few covers that I am really into. I didn’t like the cover Marilyn Manson did of sweet dreams… Though it seems to be a popular one. I prefer the original.  So I was happily surprised to like this one. It does not replace the original… Slow and soft,  I will always love Jim Morrison’s voice. But this version with the creepy feel of Marilyn Manson singing… It has a different feel. One that I can appreciate.
