February book release planned

Cover Image

Serena has been doing another short story collection and she finally got all the stories for it done.

We have it scheduled for a Valentine’s Day release.

She is going to be working on a new collection as she said that short stories seem to collect so easily…So the Next one is titled Stacked Nightmares.

So please stay tuned for more details.

Announced changes

I am going to be doing two separate Poem a Day challenges and I am going to be doing the Fae 50k. I am going to be going for a daily habit more than the word count. The fun thing is that you don’t have to do 50k to win the Fae 50k you merely have to write daily. I am going to be trying to get as much word count as I can each day.

I Think I am going to just leave my Monday as a single poetry post for the remainder of October and figure out what I want to replace Publishing Demystified with in December.

Publishing Demystified

The purpose of this one is simple. Most likely everyone here knows I run Fae Corps Publishing and I have been doing this in the background for a while now. I plan on talking clearly about the tools I use for publishing, and the way that each one works. Demystifying what I do. Is that to say that I will be making my own self unnecessary? No, because my experience is valuable. I just feel like so much of the process is made out to be harder than it needs to be.

Today I want to discuss What the difference is between an anthology and a collection.

Anthology is a specific term. It’s where multiple authors gather to create a new book to delight the world.

A collection is usually a single author combining their stories into one single book.

The reason why I wanted to discuss this is because there are some people who believe that they have to be in an anthology or write a full length novel to be published.

Even if you have had your stories in other publishers anthologies you still own the copyright. You have to acknowledge the previous publication in the book. Otherwise you can combine your own work to make a collection to publish.

You have options for your own work . Don’t think that you are stuck with a novel or nothing.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

A possible break from the routine

Meme

so I have been doing my best to post the Drawtober daily …problem is that this weekend I will somewhere with no internet. I might be capable of doing the update during a sneak into the town to check on my kid (Who is an adult and refuses to go ) but I am not sure if I can. I will get it done Friday and I will will be back Sunday …but Saturday I am not certain I will be able to get up.

Let’s continue the talk about the files.

All books have multiple files that go into the making and marketing of them.

Today I want to discuss the main document. By the end of the publication process you will have a pdf that will be with the covers  – for ARC (Also an Epub in the same situation). You will have a doc file (or an odt depending on the office program you use.) And then you will have both the pdf and epub without the cover attached.

The reason why you don’t want to attach the cover to the main file is that the site will add the cover to the book inside as well if you attach it. However, ARC copies are sent directly to the reader and often need the cover.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

Let’s chat about the files.

All books have multiple files that go into the making and marketing of them.

I have talked about the covers.

I don’t know if I have discussed the main document, yet…but today I want to discuss the marketing images.

I use 3 types for each book.

I start with a cover reveal. This is actually 2 separate images. One of the cover with a release date and other information, and one where the cover is hidden. (I have not been doing this with my own personal books because of how I have been doing the presentation of them.)

The second one is usually an about the author. This is featuring a picture of the author and a short biography written in 3rd person.

The third one and the most flexible one is a teaser. This one will have a short text from the book. This is often a paragraph or two at the most (or a poem in a poetry volume).

There’s occasionally other stuff that can be done for the marketing images … but I am listing the three that I do for every one.  Then you can just share the images and the link to get the book seen.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

I have 2 things for today.

One is a minor announcement that I have decided to turn this into a book. I am going to be hopefully less scattered in my way of teaching in it … but I’m working on it. I don’t know how long it will take to get it done.

Okay, and second I want to discuss covers. You will to publish a book need several versions of the cover. I know that it will seem confusing and counterproductive. It is necessary however.

You will start with a png of your front and rear cover. If you are buying it from a artist you might only have the front and full in the png…but I’m talking to you as if you are doing everything like I do. I use the system at Barnes and nobles to get the spine.  Barnes and nobles will let you upload a pdf of your front cover and one of your rear cover and then they will help you design the spine. You can download the full cover from there. If you download it immediately you usually will not have to remove the barcode.

Once you have the pdf I recommend you export the page to jpg to give you a full cover image. You will need that. The pdf is going to be the wrong size for at least one of the other places. having a full image will help you to get the cover sized for the sites as needed. (You will not want a barcode on the image. If you ended up with the barcode erase it.)

You will need a jpg of the front cover for Amazon. Everywhere else wants a png. Amazon is the most picky thing ever.

Remember that I said I used two pdf to do Barnes and nobles? I use the template found on Amazon. They provide three templates for each item. A front, a back, and a Full cover template. With the right pdf program you can fix the picture in place of the outlines. Do make sure that you remove the words first or the sites will not accept it.

Ingram has its own template, and it is very specific to each book . It includes the barcode for Ingram.

The cover of the paperback is not going to be the same size as the one for the hardback. And only Ingram offers options for other editions.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

Formatting is hard, y:all.

You have to start with your page size and go from there. Fae corps publishing only uses 6×9 unless we’re doing a kids book. Children’s books are generally an 8×8 or an 8.5×11.

Then you have to deal with the font and the margins. I try to choose a fancy one for the title page and then something easy to read for the body. I personally don’t like Times New Roman. It looks wrong to me. I usually do Book Antiqua or Garamond. I keep the formatting roughly the same for all of the books. The Chapter title is usually centered, Bold, and Underlined. The margins are 1 in on all four sides. There’s a few authors that have done the formatting themselves…and I am not adverse to them. I only keep the page size the same. If they want to do the rest of the work I don’t argue.

The problem comes with the authors that don’t listen and send me their work in pdf format.

I can try to do a convert from pdf to word…but some of the words convert wrong. So I will end up with odd question mark symbols in my document that I now have to go figure out.

Adding pictures is another headache. You have to set it up properly and get it so that the text flows around it properly. That takes practice to get it right every time.

Format is only the first stage of any book.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

Publishing Demystified

The purpose of this one is simple. Most likely everyone here knows I run Fae Corps Publishing and I have been doing this in the background for a while now. No, because my experience is valuable. I just feel like so much of the process is made out to be harder than it needs to be.

This week I have been trying to do life things, so I am feeling behind in the publishing process.

So much of the time I have huge amounts of work on my desk and I don’t always have the energy to do it all. The first thing I had to learn is that I would end up dropping balls in the process of making the books. I have had to learn which balls were glass and which were plastic.

This means that there are days when my health comes first and I am not able to get work done or even be accessible.

I love what I do but there is days that I can’t even get out of the bed. As a small publishing firm that means I have to plan on the time I will be down whenever I plan deadlines.

When I give a deadline and then have people wait to give me their stuff until way after the deadline it usually means I have to scramble to get it done. Places like Amazon punish the publisher who doesn’t have their stuff done on time. Failure to meet the schedule will get you prohibited from releasing pre-orders for a full year.

As I said above there is often a mystery about what I do, because I do it and I don’t make it a big deal.

I will leave on the bottom of the post the upcoming calendar. I feel like that will help. As You can see this changes slightly each week. Things get adjusted because Authors are not ready or I get a book that I had promised space.

I will get those listed closer. I feel like if I were to put them on the blog it would put too much pressure. I have “penciled” in dates for several authors for 2025 already.
