So I was trying to find the song from childhood that had been brought up by another post (OfcabbagesandKings) that was talking about a song from his childhood. I still haven’t found the exact song I was looking for but this site is a wonderful treasure for older music taught to children.
Okay…I get recommended writing tools at least once a day…sometimes once an hour. Most of them are bloody expensive.
I can’t afford to pay out for quite a few of them. Oh believe me…I have paid for some, and for services…(Including some editors that I plan to recommend on another post)
This one is entirely about the programs I use.
We will start with the ones I was willing to pay for.
Canva – I pay for the premium features. The reason is because of the amount of use this opens up. I use it for marketing, poetry images, blog images, cover design, and quite a few other fun little things. This is not an expensive cost but it is a monthly cost. I pay $13 a month.
Master PDF – This was a one time cost. It has come down since I bought it. It was closer to 100 when I bought it. It’s now $70. I can use this to make the full covers, sign contracts, adjust a pdf in whatever way I need to. This is the most comprehensive editor I have found. There is a few features I would like it to have and I used to have a pdf compiler program that did those but I don’t have it currently…might look for one.
Google Drive – I pay for the largest google drive so I can have some file access and backup ability. This is not a need. It is a personal preference. I have lost files too often.
One Drive/One Note – okay those who have followed me for awhile know I had to switch my writing on my phone from Evernote to One Note. This was a difficult decision prompted by Evernote choosing to go with a forced AI…I was uncomfortable with it and tried to opt out. The response I got was …sad to say the least. So I pay for One drive to make One note usable. It costs me $8 monthly.
That is it. The paid list.
Now for the freeware.
LibreOffice – This program does everything Microsoft office does and then some. And it does not cost anything.
Sigil – Epubs are the filetype that publishing require. Libre office will export to epub. But you have to fix the file. It only requires a couple of minor fixes – but it needs done if you expect to use the created epub.
And Lastly – this one is a tool I use for Communication.
Discord – It allows me to easily transfer files to the authors and be able to announce upcoming events and such. It makes things easier for me. Fae Corps Publishing’s Discord even has channels for writing games and such to try and help the writers. There is places for feedback and general help, and prompts. All conveniently in one place.
This of course is not all my tools. But it is the main ones. and it gives you a start.
So this is from one of the anthologies I have been working on getting published. The part I am so very happy about is the AI Generated Content section.
They are definitely asking about what is happening in the creative process. I will on occasion use AI Tools for the assistance of editing. (Spell check is an AI tool. Pro writing Aid, Grammarly are both AI Tools. ) but I don’t rely on them solely. I don’t like how they try to change the voice of a piece. I use them to assist my edit. But I still use my own judgement. And I NEVER use AI for creating anything. If I can’t do myself I would pay another artist who can. (And I have commissioned art in the past).
I cannot tell you how happy I am to see Amazon asking for the origin of the work now. I have read some of the AI Generated Content. It is garbage. So as far as I am concerned Amazon should warn buyers that AI is responsible.
So, I think that I want to talk about fan fiction.
This seems to be a hot topic. Some people are offended and others are confused.
I am of the opinion that as long as you are not hurting anyone allowing your imagination to be caught up in a story is not a bad thing. Even if you don’t follow the path of the original author. That is part of why we have unique minds and imaginations.
There are some really good fan fiction out there. Allow yourself to enjoy the read.
I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for 27 years. I played 2nd edition. I started to run games when 3rd edition was released.
That being said I am not happy with the newer editions of D&D. 4th edition was entirely too combat oriented, and 5th edition has simplified it down to the point that it is not fun for the nerd who enjoys the complexities of the original game. I run Pathfinder. It has all of the fun that I grew to love in the original game.
I love the roleplaying and the imagination that goes into every aspect of the game.
What as a publisher do I think of the leaked OGL 1.1? Wizards of the Coast tried with 4th edition to revoke their OGL and failed. I think that legally there was too much that was actually involved in the publication of game books that people thought was controlled by Wizards that was not. I think that Pathfinder releasing their own version of a OGL called ORC will help to expand the market for gaming material. I remember in 2nd edition if you wanted a monster or an item you had to create it yourself. The market is flooded with options now. It is fairly amazing.
I have been working on a game world of my own. I don’t know if I will ever get it to releasable state…so many details to get put in. I have run quite a few games in said world.
Okay, I got something! I used to love mythology… like ALL of them. I mean I enjoy the random stories of the spider god Anansi… and the Celtic mythology of the Fae… and…. and…. and….
So that being said… I found a way to say that someone knows nothing about mythology (Greek) without actually having to say that…
Yeah, I am sure y’all know this one by now…But today it is simply because I am fighting an almost daily migraine. I am fighting mental health issues, hard, and I just don’t have any extra energy to suggest new web comics. The internet is so full of Wonderful comics, but I just don’t know what I have already recommended and don’t have the energy needed to pick a new one.
Instead I will recommend a neat content creator on TikTok. She sings Puns. She is a fun creator. I may alternate a bit and recommend some Tiktok creators in between some web comics. It sounds like it might be less stressful. Go laugh at Drew and her Puns.
so I came across this on Tiktok….I thought that it would be a fun one to check out this week. join me?
I have looked at the Instagram account for the artist…and followed the link to the website. They have amazing art on there. however I don’t see an organization that I am used to with webcomics. Perhaps it is still being setup? I personally plan to keep my eyes on it in hopes of seeing the cute setup in the video.
Contemplating Reiko is a fun comic that rides a little on the dark side. It is mostly done in single page comics that rarely are sequential. I have spent hours reading the back comics and laughing my tail off.
According to the about page on the site ‘Contemplating Reiko is a wicked little cartoon strip about a wicked little girl named Reiko and her three sisters Shinobu, Shirabe, and Shihoka. ‘ I remember reading this comic as far back as 21 years ago. it has always been such a delight to read. The characters are very demonic, so the themes are evil. I personally enjoy Reiko and her antics.
So, tell me, what webcomics, if any, do you follow?
I decided to offer links to a few calls for submissions today. This has been such a busy week with release day coming up for both Through the Sunshine & Poetic Reminders that I am afraid I have gotten very little else done.
then there is this list of 48 Writing Contests in June 2020
I know that this is a small post for me…but it is highly packed with possibility….If you enter let me know. I am curious as to whether anyone will see this.
