Wild Wednesday

Ever think that you were caught up, and then realized that you had forgotten about something important? That was me this past week. I have done all the work for July and publishing… and I thought I had done June as well… only to find out that I had forgotten about June.

Though I was frustrated and feeling like I was a screw up… it was not the end of the world. It was not even a truly terrible thing. It was just a little bit of a frustration. I got it fixed (though my own poetry volume in June immortality is only in ebook form until the 20th.) A minor oops. Still at the time…it felt like I was just incapable of doing anything right.

And it is not an uncommon thing for such situations to cause a lot of people to feel like they can’t do anything right. The internal voice is often so mean.

Don’t let that voice make you feel like you are anything less than amazing. I’m fighting with my own.

My thoughts on OneNote

Okay, I have been working with OneNote since the email from Evernote… and I have some thoughts.

Overall, I am not unhappy with OneNote…

It is not perfect. I have some issues. But it is good enough for my needs.

I can do separate notebooks – which is the only true requirement I had in my writing program.

I can move the notebooks around and I can make separate pages for each poem- which I could not do that in Evernote.

The notebooks have the ability for sections – again not something I could do in Evernote.

It does not have a word counter option 😔. Evernote had that and I am severely missing it.

The option to print is far nicer than that of Evernote, but it is still not allowing me to set it up for the whole thing to be a single document for the pdf. I wish I could have some options for setting up the print to pdf a little bit better.

I can use it offline as long as the notebook is open. However I am limited on how many I can have open.

The best functionality is on my desktop computer on Windows. It is not compatible with my android tablet – though my phone (android) is compatible. I have no options for the Linux laptop except for the web browser version.

The app doesn’t cost me anything but it does require storage space on my OneDrive… which means I have to subscribe to it…It is cheaper than Evernote was monthly by about 60 cents…($8 vs $7.45) so I am not going to complain.

All that is to say that I am not upset about the situation. I’m sorry Evernote chose to lose my business. But I think that I found a substitute that works for me. Would I recommend it? Yeah. It has the functionality I was looking for. The lack of a word counter is the biggest complaint that I have… but I can make do with online word count tally sites. Not a big deal. Annoying, but only minorly so.

Wild Wednesday

Thanks to a wonderful gift my computer is getting a much needed upgrade.

So, it was decided that I would do a fresh install at the same time..

The only problem with that is NOW I am doing the back up of files that I have been avoiding for months…

UGH.

This is going to be a bit…

However, I will have more space as the upgrade includes another Terabyte Hard drive(SSD), and 16g Ram ( I currently have 8) and a pretty nice new CPU Cooler that will extend the life of my system. I am quite tickled by the gift.

Wild Wednesday

I HATE AI.

It shouldn’t be something I feel so virulent about. I am aware that AI has it’s uses. I just cannot accept that it is being pushed into the creative space.

Drawing, writing, and other creative endeavors are not something that should be easily reproduced…

I have since 2014 used Evernote for my writing. It allowed me to do a notebook for each volume. It allowed me to organize me…

Evernote decided to send out an Email. Not only were they raising the price…to almost double….which I really dislike but would be fine with paying because it feels like I had something that worked for me…

But they also announced that they were adding AI to “Clean up your notes after a meeting.”

Nope.

No way to opt out. Just here is AI. It will help you. Although I did reach out via email… and the response was that the AI was an optional thing…but when I said that they needed to say that because the original email said nothing about options… and I got a uhm response.

I dislike Microsoft products and avoid them like the plague. I only use windows because I cannot get a couple of my programs to function in Linux. However…Since I cannot find any other option that has all of the options I need other that Evernote…I switched to OneNote.

This is going to be a learning time for me.

I have no idea if I am going to be able to do the same amount of writing, or if it will help me write more…or what.

*Sigh*

Wish Me Luck.

Utility App review

So I have been asked for reviews on the apps I use in both my writing and in my art….I figure that it will help me with content for this blog, so here goes. I do much of my writing on Android devices. If I use either laptop or computer it would be a version of office. However, on android I often need access to notes or easier methods for organization of what I write. I have found a couple of apps that are wonderful for this. Today I am going to give a review on my favorite of them.

notebooks pro is a premium app. It’s not real expensive and there is a free version. I found it so useful that I wanted the full version.

It is extremely flexible and allows for you to create books for writing in.

You can add attachments (pictures) and each page is unlimited. I set up my poetry volume with a number of pages equal to the poems that I want in the finished volume.

You can back it up in dropbox, Google drive or locally… And restore it from any of the three.

Honestly, this is one of my better writing apps. It allows you to export as a pdf or you can copy and paste the text.

I highly recommend it for any one who writes on the go.

Poetry, rules and rebellion

I have a confession…writing poetry with certain constraints has always made me antsy. I have felt like I was somehow not good enough to write following the rules. So, I have written copious amounts of free verse…avoiding the structure of any fotms.

Then, as I grew as a writer and a poet, I found myself saying I don’t write that way too often. Well why the Hell not? Am I a Poet? Or do I just pretend I am?

So, when presented with a form/structure poem idea, I start by looking up the rules. For me, this is my go to site.

Believe me, I feel like a high school student again. In high school I knew the rules and felt my style was better as free verse. I think that if anyone tried to tell me that I needed to follow rules with my poetry I even would blow it off with poetic license.

The rebel nature of free verse still appeals. I will likely never be the next Haiku or Sonnet genius. Poetry speaks from the heart, and mine is often chaotic and unstructured. The meaning remains though.

So, just out of curiousity, what is your favorite types of poetry? Why?

Practical versus sensual

Over the years,  I have become very practical about how I write. Due to low money, I started writing more digitally.  I convinced myself that I enjoyed it just as much, if not more because of the fact that editing was easier in digital. I forced myself to forget the lovely sensual pleasures of a pencil in hand. Or the smell of lead as one writes. The joy of seeing your own handwriting on paper. Still digital allows easier editing,  and I  do loose things written on paper far easier.  However I think it is something as the digital age progresses that we are loosing.  As we stretch for practicalities,  we too often pass on just the sensual aspects of what we do.
I enjoyed my tenth & eleventh  grade years in high school,  mostly for the teachers who encouraged unique minds to be themselves. One class in particular, creative writing. The class was an English /language arts option.  The teacher was laid back and easy going.  The first two days of the week were reading. Her rules those days were only that you read, she didn’t care if it were comic book or novel.  We had four books assigned (one per quarter ) but otherwise we had freedom of choice.  We did have to do a report on what we read,  basically review it for the teacher. Then the last three days were writing.  Those days she wheeled in a huge A/V cart. There was various types of paper (construction,  college ruled, kindergarten lined, tissue,  etc) and various writing implements (pens, pencils,  crayons,  colored pencils,  etc) on the cart for us to use.  Rules for the writing days were simple.  Each quarter we had to finish one project.  That meant a rough draft, a edited and proofread draft (by a classmate ), a draft proofread by the teacher, and a final draft.  That opened up the whole class for creative learning.  I truly believe the ability to use so many different mediums helped. Which mediums catch your fancy?  Do you create best when you use just one type?
